Mitchell Leisen was an American art director and director; became Paramount's most reliable contract
director (1935-1951). He was noted for visual elegance and for his ability to direct actresses. His forte were
comedies and romances, often scripted by Preston Sturgess or Billy Wilder. His films included:

Midnight
(1939),
Hold Back the Dawn
(1941),
Lady in the Dark
(1944). He garnered his sole
Academy Award nomination for Best Art Director for Cecil B. DeMille's
Dynamite
(1929).
