Description
Welch's jelly has come in glasses with metal lids & kid-friendly designs since 1953. When the jelly was gone, the ordinary jar turned into a great juice glass for the kids. The shape of the glasses & characters depicted has evolved over the years.
Welch's started sponsoring the Howdy Doody show in 1951. In 1953, they decided to put Howdy Doody characters on their jelly jars, along with a verse starting with "Hey Kids!" - the familiar call to the Howdy Doody shows. Later, over 20 sets with different cartoon characters were made by Welch's.
This glass from the first series in 1953 has characters in yellow from the popular Howdy Doody TV show - Howdy Doody shooting arrows, Princess Summerfall Winterspring with her hands in the air, & Clarabelle with an arrow through an apple on his head. A band around the top in white letters & music notes says "Hey Kids! What A Shot Just Like Welch's It Hits The Spot".
The glass is about 4 inches tall & tapers from the bottom rim of about 2 inches in diameter to almost 2-3/4 inches in diameter at the top rim. The bottom of the glass has an impressed design of Princess Summerfall Winterspring's face - a "surprise" feature when the glass is empty.
The glass is in excellent condition - no chips, cracks, or signs of wear - & the painted yellow & white design & words are still vibrant.
